What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a fast, effective, hyper-cooling treatment that is appropriate for anyone seeking injury treatment, muscle recovery, tissue damage repair, weight loss or skin rejuvenation.

At our downtown Ottawa clinic, we offer you our capital city’s first Cryochamber. It is a unique service that releases ‘feel good’ endorphins that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

During your session, the chamber will fill with a fine nitrogen mist and be safely cooled to approximately -140°C for up to 3 minutes. The natural response to the cold is for the blood vessels near the skin to vasoconstrict, causing an increase in blood flow to the internal organs, flooding red blood cells with oxygen, nutrients and healing enzymes.

After leaving the chamber, your body temperature will quickly go back to normal, through vasodilation, releasing the nutrient-rich blood back into the skin and muscle tissues for immediate and lasting results.

Cryochambers (also known as a Cryosauna) are frequently visited by professional or elite athletes and celebrities alike.

Benefits

Beauty & Spa

  • Reduces cellulite
  • Banishes toxins found in deeper skin levels, helping to reduce skin aging
  • Improves skin conditions – including psoriasis, blemishes and acne
  • Increases collagen production – evens skin tone and reduces visible signs of aging
  • Boosts metabolism to promote weight loss – your body requires a significant amount of energy to heat back up again, causing the body to burn between 2000-3300 Kilojoules (kJ) over a few hours following the treatment, which translates to approximately 500+ calories. This is roughly equivalent to a 45min run or 1hr of swimming. It is a safe and efficient method to kick start gradual weight loss.

FAQ'S

What do I wear?

You will be provided with socks or slippers, gloves, a robe and asked to undress in a changing room. The more skin exposed the better – most men wear boxers or shorts and women wear a wire-free bra or t-shirt rolled up. It is entirely up to your own personal level of comfort. The procedure is dry and does not make your skin wet.

Is it safe?

Yes, nitrogen is a non-toxic gas that makes up over 70% of the air we breathe. Your head is above the chamber at all times and your hands and feet are well protected by slippers and gloves. A trained medical grade therapist stays with you throughout the session monitoring your body’s response. Oxygen monitors, alarms and other safeguards are also used to track your progress and ensure that you don’t exceed the allowed time. You are able to leave the Cryochamber at any time. Rest assured, client safety is our primary concern.

How often should I have a Cryo session?

Depending on your physical condition, you will feel immediate relief from pain, plus improved energy and elevated mood due to the rush of ‘feel good’ endorphins. Maximum results are obtained with repeated treatments. Research has shown that you will experience improved and cumulative benefits with a minimum of 10 sessions within a 2 or 3 week period. We are happy to tailor a personalized program based on your requirements and goals.

Is Cryotherapy suitable for everyone?

Generally, Cryotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for most people seeking relief from pain and inflammation, however it is not suitable for women who are pregnant or anyone who has:

  • Hypertension
  • A pacemaker
  • A heart condition
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Cold allergy
  • Cancer (or previously had cancer)
  • Fever
  • Under the age of 18 without parental consent

If you are concerned about any conditions you have that may prevent you from undergoing treatment, consult with your doctor prior.

Is Cryotherapy covered by insurance plans?

Insurance coverage for Cryotherapy varies depending on the professional designation and/or qualifications of the therapist and the insurance plan, but most insurance plans cover Cryotherapy when combined with a Physiotherapy or Chiropractic treatment.
